TRAILSYDE RENTALS

Begun in 1918, Trailsyde was the private cabin of log architect C D Aldrich. He wrote about Trailsyde and his many other log buildings in The Real Log Cabin first printed in the 20's and reissued decades later.

Aldrich’s wife, Darragh, is an important figure in Minnesota letters. She enjoyed a long career as a writer of books, plays, magazine and newspaper articles, plus years on WCCO radio in the Twin Cities. Her tiny writer’s retreat, The Crow’s Nest, perches on a cliff immediately overlooking Trailysde. Constructing it, Aldrich included a timber from a nearby shipwreck from 1885.

Over its history Trailsyde has been altered and modernized, but not without keeping a firm footing in its origins. It is today as close to what it was in the 20’s as possible, but from one room it has expanded to five plus a bathroom. The bulk of the additions are made from another Aldrich log cabin from the same property. The most recent bedroom addition combines log with frame construction but blends into the whole.

Interior furnishing reflects earlier times, too, from the log standard and queen size beds (replacing log-built bunks) to the fully modern but antique looking cook stove. Most guests fall in love with the prominent rocky point in front of the cabin, its pebble-sand beach, and inviting front deck. Unlike a motel or condo, Trailsyde is a real north shore north woods experience.
